Sirawit Chatu (b.2000 ,Rayong ,Thailand) is a multidisciplinary artist and an independent curator.
His artworks are based on Thai Culture, Traditional art, religion, folklore and oral history,juxtaposed with elements from popular culture and the internet. Sirawit's practice includes various media of art, such as; painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video, performance and so on. His art sheds light on the complexities and contradictions inherent in Thai traditions, offering a fresh perspective on social norms, in order to humorously criticize contemporary issues. Since the age of twelve, he has been featured in over 30 exhibitions, domestic and overseas.
In 2022, Sirawit received a scholarship to study Japanese painting at Joshibi University, Japan. During this time, he established an alternative art space in Kanagawa and began his curatorial practice. Ryo art space Collaborative Project showcased 4 exhibitions featuring international artists from Thailand, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom.
His current body of work is set around Thai benefits and spiritual practices that are hidden within the capitalist system. Sirawit's solo exhibitions, Endless Prayer in 2023 and Re- enchanted in 2024, delve into the intricate relationship between capitalism and spirituality, highlighting how economic factors have become intertwined with religious practices. His artworks shed light on low local myths and traditional beliefs are commodified and exploited within this context. Through the incorporation of the media, the exhibitions showcase how these capitalist influences perpetuate an endless cycle of prayer and devotion.
